Arlington is talking about Missing Middle, even when the conversation turns snarky.
A Reddit user posted a photo of a “Missing Middle Alert” flyer taped to a utility pole in Woodmont under the title “Stay classy Arlington.” The flyer warns that three townhouses are coming to N. 24th St. and asks neighbors to help stop them. The post in r/nova, the Northern Virginia forum, drew 172 upvotes and 144 comments.
Most commenters poked fun at the neighbors fighting the project. The top comment, with 561 upvotes, riffed on a familiar yard sign:
“In this house we believe that science is real, black lives matter, no human is illegal, love is love, kindness first, and three townhomes will ruin our community.” — makingnosmallplan
“Hate has no home here (it can’t afford one)” — A_Random_Catfish
One neighbor chimed in from the block itself:
“I live in this neighborhood. The exact sign is on a home right beside the planned development” — Sea_Investigation
The critics made our point for us
Keep reading and the thread turns to price. When one commenter mocked the idea of keeping out “the poors,” others did the math:
“Watch out, they’re building townhomes going for $1 million! Can’t have those poors dirtying our safe neighborhood!” — aznxk3vi17
“$1.8m-$2.1m” — 007-Bond-007
“$2M.” — Revolutionary-You449
“So affordable for teachers.” — Never-be-Boring
That’s the part of Missing Middle the County Board doesn’t advertise. EHO was sold as a way to open Arlington to working families. By the commenters’ own estimates, these Woodmont townhouses will sell for $1.5 million to more than $2 million each.
As we reported in June, this is the first multiplex proposed in Woodmont since Arlington ended single family zoning in 2023. The developer cleared the lot’s trees before the permit was even approved.
